Once again, the police are reminding owners of motor vehicles in the Alberni Valley to secure their vehicles and to remove all belongings, especially valuables.
Between May 3rd and May 19th, the Port Alberni RCMP have received 15 reports of thefts from vehicles. These calls come from all areas of the city and include a call from Bamfield and one from Sproat Lake as well.
Most cases of theft from a vehicle are occurring in the overnight hours and are often from unlocked vehicles. In most instances, vehicle operators have left belongings and valuables in the vehicle, some in plain sight and others in a closed console. Several purses, wallets and pieces of identification were left in the vehicles and were subsequently stolen by thieves. Some thieves are then using the stolen credit or bank cards for personal gain. Your identification, including credit cards, needs to be protected at all times to minimize your risk of also becoming a victim of identity theft.
In other cases, hundreds of dollars’ worth of property in backpacks, duffle type bags and other gear were stolen. The thieves are so desperate to steal anything that can get them some money, that one vehicle was broken into for a plastic bag containing some empty beer cans. The damage done to the vehicle far outweighs the value of the stolen items. The answer, leave nothing in plain sight and no valuables of any kind in your vehicle. Take away the opportunity!
As a deterrent for would be thieves, the Port Alberni RCMP now have "All Valuables Removed" window stickers available for pick up. They are bright and clearly state there is nothing of value in the vehicle. They stick on the inside of the glass window above the door handle. The key piece to this strategy is to actually have removed all valuables and belongings and to leave the vehicle secured.

Crime Stoppers wants you to help prevent future crimes:
Continuing from last week’s crime prevention strategies for residents and while still practicing social distancing and self-isolation, what better time to improve the safety for your family and property. Help improve the safety for your family and home while deterring criminal activity and improving security around your home, outbuildings, vehicles and during online activities for today and into the future
Try some of these simple techniques:
Ensure all your computers, tablets and smartphones are set up with and using a secure and unique password. Keep it secret and change it regularly ensuring you use a mix of upper and lower case alpha-numeric and special characters. Use only secure and trusted websites for any financial transactions. Be mindful of what you post on social media and use privacy settings. Avoid posts letting others know when you are away from your property. Ensure your anti-virus and malware software is up-to-date. And be aware of online frauds and scams by checking the Better Business Bureau and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre websites. If it sounds too good to be true or if you’re in doubt on its origin, DON’T respond.
If you can afford it and feel more comfortable, security cameras are an effective way to monitor your property and many can be linked to your smartphone/device so you can be alerted to activity in real time. Invest in high quality cameras for clearer images day and night.
Be a good neighbour and look out for one another. Report any suspicious activity and consider joining or forming a Block Watch group with your neighbours. Please visit www.blockwatch.com to learn about this program. Practice 9 pm “lock it or lose it” routine by setting an alarm on your smart device to remind you to check doors, windows and vehicles for security.
As most crimes are crimes of opportunity, remove the opportunity. Being informed, aware and actively utilizing crime prevention strategies could be the difference for you and your family.

Crime Stoppers wants you to help prevent future crimes:
With social distancing and self-isolation, we find ourselves at home looking for productive ways to fill our time. Now is a prime opportunity to practice and apply some simple crime prevention strategies to help deter criminal activities and improve security around your home, outbuildings, vehicles and during online activities for today and into the future.
Most crimes are crimes of opportunity. Being informed, aware and actively utilizing crime prevention strategies could be the difference for you and your family.
Try these simple techniques:
Trim bushes, shrubs and trees around your home removing hiding spots and allowing for clear sight lines around your home, especially near entrances. Ensure all doors and windows have working lock mechanisms and use them. Add a blocking device to prevent the windows from being opened more than 10 cm or 4 inches.
Use good outdoor lighting, including motion detector lights, for low light areas, and entrances.
Check your vehicles, including the glove box and center console, and remove items in view and articles of any value anywhere in your vehicle. Thieves typically target vehicles because they’re unlocked or items are left in plain sight, and once in your vehicle, thieves take anything available to them.
Engrave your personal property, including bicycles and tools, for easy identification. Marked property is also a deterrent to thieves. While you’re at it, make a written or electronic log of all your valuables and keep it in a safe place out of the home.

Crime Stoppers needs your help in solving the following crime:
The safety of the students of Port Alberni should be everybody’s concern. All too often however drivers are blatantly breaking the law and putting our kids at risk.
Many students travel to and from their respective schools by school bus. These specially equipped buses make it very simple for all to see when students are, or will be, embarking or disembarking the bus. With their bright yellow colouring, flashing red lights and extending stop signs, it’s clear to see when these buses are planning their next stop to pick up or drop off passengers. Sadly though, far too many drivers continue to pass school buses while their lights are flashing and their stop signs are out and visible for all to see. This action puts the students at a great risk of being injured or even killed.
From January 17th, 2020 through February 3rd, 2020 the Port Alberni RCMP have received at least 17 complaints of vehicles doing just that; passing school buses while they are stopped with their red lights flashing and the stop signs out. Most of School District 70 school buses are equipped with cameras that capture photographs of offending vehicles. These time and date stamped pictures are then sent to the RCMP. Drivers of these offending vehicles are then issued a $368 ticket for Failing to Stop for a School Bus contrary to the Motor Vehicle Act. The ticket also carries 3 penalty points issued by ICBC.
Pay attention and stop for school buses. And obey the 30 kph in school and playground zones. Let the students arrive at their destination safely.

On Wednesday January 29th at approximately 4:35 am, the This N That store located at 3017 – 3rd Ave was broken into.
A masked suspect walked up from the vacant lot beside Steampunks Café and used a large tool to gain entry through the front door. The suspect required several strikes to the front door over a few minutes to smash the small opening in the glass and knock down the security bars. The suspect entered the store later followed by the second masked suspect. The suspects stole a sizable amount of collectable paper money and collector coins from a display case, including a large copper coin stamped with the image of the head of an Indigenous man.
A nearby resident heard the glass break and called police. CCTV video indicates there were other suspects outside under umbrellas. The suspects fled the scene running northbound down 3rd Ave and back into the vacant lot. A possible witness was driving a white or light coloured 4 door GMC Denali pickup truck having turned left off Argyle St and was southbound on 3rd Ave when the two masked suspects ran from the store.
Both suspects have thin to average builds, were wearing hooded jackets and carrying black backpacks. One suspect wore a ballcap and sunglasses while the other was in shorts over leggings.

Now that the New Year is upon us, don’t let fraudsters and con-artists trick you out of your hard earned money, your identification or your property.
Whether by phone, online or someone showing up on your doorstep, con-artists are everywhere. Your personal and financial information is sought after. Educating yourself on the latest frauds and scams is your greatest protection against these criminals. Check the Better Business Bureau website for the latest scams and frauds.
Taking some simple steps can help protect you and your family.
Do not give out personal or financial information unless you are certain the service provider or business is legitimate. If uncertain, just don’t do it. Instead contact the business directly yourself. Financial institutions will never contact you to clarify your personal or financial information and will not ask for your PIN.
Don’t get tricked into unwarranted home repairs. Deal with reputable companies and if you’re not uncertain consult the Better Business Bureau website before you start.
Don’t open unsolicited emails as they may have viruses attached and be mindful of fraudulent websites. Hang up on callers threatening to have you arrested if you don’t comply; this is clearly a scam as this is not how it is done. Or simply don’t answer calls from unknown callers.
And remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Protect yourself by staying informed. If you have been a victim of fraud, report it by calling police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Don’t let the Grinch or thieves spoil your Christmas!
Now that Christmas is over and you have your new TVs, games and sports equipment, electronics, and tools, don’t advertise your Christmas haul to others. Be sure to recycle all those now empty boxes and packaging materials by bringing them to the recycling centre, don’t leave them out at the curb!
Leaving them at the curb simply broadcasts to all those who pass by what new items you have. You could be contributing to someone else’s shopping list. So remember to break down those boxes and packaging materials and recycle them at the recycling depot. Or break them down small enough that they can be buried within your mixed recycling.
Some other simple crime prevention tips can go a long way in protecting your property. Don’t forget to lock your doors and windows of your home and vehicle and keep valuables out of sight. Use outside lighting to keep dark areas around your home well lit. And be sure to also engrave or mark your items with your BC driver’s licence number for easy identification. Engraving tools are available for loan at the Port Alberni RCMP Detachment.
No one needs to know what you have!

In a 2 month period, the Port Alberni RCMP have responded to at least 10 reports of TELUS property being broken into, stolen, damaged or vandalized. This criminal activity is affecting more than just TELUS, it’s affecting their customers and the community of Port Alberni as well.
During the night of September 30th, an unknown suspect vandalized the TELUS building using spray paint.
Between October 12th and December 2nd, the TELUS building and its compound in the 4000 block of 6th Ave have been broken into 6 times. In some of these cases, TELUS vehicles parked in the compound were also broken into and various tools and equipment stolen. It appears that in some of these instances the suspect or suspects may have left a vehicle parked nearby as they entered the TELUS property.
On November 1st, someone cut down a tree around the 5 km marker of Lacy Lake Rd and Loon Lake Main Rd causing it to fall and take out the TELUS lines. It appears that this action was a deliberate act to down the TELUS lines.
Then sometime on November 28th large sections of cable were stolen from a work site on Loon Lake Main logging road. Both aerial and fiber optic cable were stolen causing an outage for many customers. This one act of theft alone cost approximately $4000 to replace and repair the cables. The stolen cables themselves were worth a small fraction of that amount and the fiber optic cable has no salvage value.

People are stealing purses, wallets and identification from vehicles, unattended personal items and from shopping carts. Thieves then use the credit cards for unauthorized purchases and in some cases, the identification owners then become victim’s of identity theft.
Police want to remind everyone to keep an eye and a tight grip on your identification and credit cards. And don’t carry all your identification with you. Items such as SIN cards, birth certificates and passports are not needed on a regular basis so leave them secured at home or in your safety deposit box. This is especially true as we enter the busy holiday shopping season. Police have received reports of purses stolen from shopping carts. While in the store or when loading groceries or Christmas shopping into your vehicle, be sure to secure your purse or wallet first or keep it in your hands.
Don’t leave your purse or wallet unattended, not even for a moment. And never leave your wallet in your vehicle. Keep it close at hand and be mindful of pick pockets and suspicious people hanging around. You never know when somebody is watching and waiting for you to take your eyes off it as they rush in, grab it and run off.

Thieves continue to target sheds, garages and outbuildings throughout Port Alberni.
Thieves are gaining access into these storage areas as some property owners are not locking up or simply leaving the doors open for anyone to access, while in some situations thieves are forcing entry. In several situations, the thieves are accessing the back or side yards of homes from an alley or greenspace at the rear of the residence then walking to the storage building and entering them. A common problem appears to be that these areas are not well lit or visible to passers-by, neighbours and, in some cases, not even to the property owners.
Thieves are stealing whatever they can get their hands on. Everything from power and hand tools, to bicycles and electric bikes to household goods, personal mementos and even empty recyclable containers. Nothing is off limits to these thieves.
Residents are reminded to exercise effective crime prevention practices including ensuring that all doors and windows are closed and properly locked, do not leave anything in sight whether around your residence or in your vehicle, install good outdoor lighting in the front, sides and rear of your property and trim bushes minimizing areas of darkness or concealment. Surveillance cameras can also be installed for added security. Further, it is recommended that valuable items be stored inside the home and that sheds and outbuildings should ideally only be used to store less valuable items.

On Tuesday July 17th at approximately 5:30 am, unknown persons broke into the Port Boat House storage facility in the 5000 block of Dunbar St and stole an outboard motor, fishing gear and marine electronics.
The unknown male suspects cut a hole in the perimeter fence to gain access to the locked compound. Once inside, the suspects boarded a boat stored on site and proceeded to remove a 25 HP outboard motor from the boat. The suspects also compromised the door latch entering the boat’s cabin and stole several thousand dollars’ worth of items, including high end fishing gear and marine electronics.
The suspects dragged the outboard motor across the compound to the opening in the fence. It is believed that the suspects also stole a large wheeled garbage can from a neighbouring business to transport the motor and other property away from the area. Most everything stolen from this boat should be marked with the letters "BCOSF".
Several boats and boat storage facilities have been targeted by thieves, some repeatedly, in the past few months. Police are seeking information on those responsible as well as those people dealing in stolen marine equipment and fishing gear. Theft of Carvings from Bamfield
Sometime in August the “Welcome to Bamfield” sign erected on Bamfield Road upon entering Bamfield village has been vandalized on at least two occasions with irreplaceable carvings stolen from it.
The sign is a focal point to all entering the Bamfield area and it had four small carvings on it that surrounded a map of the area. The carvings included a Stellar Jay, an eagle, a bear and a tree. Sadly, the only remaining carving is the tree. The eagle and the bear are the latest carvings to be stolen from the sign. The sign and its carvings were made by Al Porter, who was an area resident at the time, and they were his artistic legacy to the community of Bamfield. Now the community and its residents are seeking answers as to what happened and want to get the artwork back. The Bamfield Community Affairs Society is offering a reward. (see attached poster).
If anyone has any information on this or any other crime, they are asked to contact the Port Alberni Detachment at 250-723-2424 or the Alberni Valley Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).
