Crime Stoppers needs your help in solving the following crime:
Two unknown persons have been targeting local businesses by making purchases by fraudulent means.
The suspects enter businesses and select various products to purchase. The suspects approach the cashier to pay where one of the suspects produces a credit card to make payment. The suspects have managed to walk away with several purchases about Port Alberni as well as other neighbouring communities.
At times, the suspects appear to shuffle through several cards before selecting one and may inquire about getting cash back with their purchase. The suspects appear to distract the clerk at the point of sale terminal and manually input the credit card number which prompts the point of sale terminal to require a signature from the customer. Further, when asked for identification, the suspects were not able to provide ID that matched the name on the card, the signatures didn’t match and their appearance didn’t match that on the ID. As the transaction is approved in some instances the suspects were allowed to walk away with the goods.
The suspects are described as two Caucasian men. The first man was wearing a grey jacket with short brown hair about 5'10 " with grey sweat pants. The second man was taller wearing dark jacket, dark hoodie, blue jeans with trimmed beard. Photos of the two men can be found on the Alberni Valley Crime Stoppers website.
Businesses are cautioned to be aware of suspicious purchases, not allow customers to enter their credit card number manually. Ask customers for identification should they be using a random credit card or you feel there may be something suspicious. You have the right to refuse service.
