Crime Stoppers wants you to help prevent future crimes:
With social distancing and self-isolation, we find ourselves at home looking for productive ways to fill our time. Now is a prime opportunity to practice and apply some simple crime prevention strategies to help deter criminal activities and improve security around your home, outbuildings, vehicles and during online activities for today and into the future.
Most crimes are crimes of opportunity. Being informed, aware and actively utilizing crime prevention strategies could be the difference for you and your family.
Try these simple techniques:
Trim bushes, shrubs and trees around your home removing hiding spots and allowing for clear sight lines around your home, especially near entrances. Ensure all doors and windows have working lock mechanisms and use them. Add a blocking device to prevent the windows from being opened more than 10 cm or 4 inches.
Use good outdoor lighting, including motion detector lights, for low light areas, and entrances.
Check your vehicles, including the glove box and center console, and remove items in view and articles of any value anywhere in your vehicle. Thieves typically target vehicles because they’re unlocked or items are left in plain sight, and once in your vehicle, thieves take anything available to them.
Engrave your personal property, including bicycles and tools, for easy identification. Marked property is also a deterrent to thieves. While you’re at it, make a written or electronic log of all your valuables and keep it in a safe place out of the home.
